The manufacturing industry currently faces a confluence of changes that will significantly transform the roles, skills, and workflows of mechanical engineers, manufacturing engineers, and machinists over the next 10 years. These changes are driven primarily by pressures on businesses to achieve the outcomes of improved productivity, production output, profitability/costs, competitivity, and sustainability and circular design. There is expected to be a greater convergence of the mechanical and manufacturing engineering roles and a significant transformation of the CNC (computer numerical control) machinist role.
